Lourdas beach, on the south coast of Kefalonia, is a great base for exploring the local area which has many beautiful sandy beaches. The nearest beach is Lourdas beach itself but the sandy bays of St Thomas beach in Karavados are also within easy reach by car.
There is a good restaurant within a couple of minutes walk downhill from the villa which is very popular with wedding parties. If the restaurant is being used it's only a few minutes further on foot to a second eatery, with a greater choice to be found in the centre of Lourdas and by the beach, both easily reached by car.
The capital of Argostoli is a 30 minute drive away and has a variety of shops, bakeries and tavernas to sample. It also offers an opportunity to buy fresh fish from the local fishing boats which bring their catch into the harbour every morning closely followed by large Loggerhead turtles looking for scraps. The pavement side fruit and vegetable stalls also sell a large variety of local produce.
Travelling south along the coast road is the small resort of Katelios with its seaside fish tavernas, Mounda bay, the nesting ground for the Caretta-Caretta turtles and the popular resort of Skala. A drive across the mountains towards Sami on the east coast is a must simply to enjoy the view, as is a visit to the natural phenomenon that is Melisanni, the lake in the cave. A drive to the top of Mount Ainos, although not for the faint hearted, provides dramatic views of the unspoilt beauty of Kefalonia.
